Choguel Kokalla Maiga, the ex-prime minister of Mali, was formally charged with embezzlement of public funds and placed in prison on Tuesday – deepening concerns over mounting political repression under the country’s ruling military junta. Maiga was sacked in 2024 after criticising the junta’s grip on power.
