US President Donald Trump is facing sharp criticism from Democrats, who accuse him of pushing the limits of presidential power. The latest flashpoint is Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to tackle crime in Washington DC and now he’s warning Chicago and New York could be next. California Governor Gavin Newsom called Trump’s tactics akin to those of a dictator, when Guard troops hit his state back in June. But Trump insists it’s a necessary move to restore order in America’’s cities. In Perspective, we spoke to Tristan Cabello, a historian and lecturer at John Hopkins University.
