Imprisoned Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu declared presidential candidate by opposition

Turkey’s Republican People’s Party (CHP) – the main opposition party and the second largest party in parliament – on Monday officially nominated embattled Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu as their presidential candidate for the 2028 elections. The announcement came after Imamoglu spent his first night in jail following corruption charges levelled against him.
