One of Myanmar’s major rebel factions has declared a unilateral ceasefire following a devastating earthquake. The military junta reported that at least 1,600 people have lost their lives in the disaster, with the toll continuing to rise rapidly. Rescue operations are concentrated in the main cities of Mandalay and Naypyidaw, but elsewhere, ongoing civil conflict is hindering relief efforts and complicating communication.
