French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday called for a “gesture of mercy and humanity” towards jailed French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal in a phone call with his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The author was sentenced to five years in prison last week in a case that has damaged already-strained ties between France and its former colony.
