Avril Lavigne celebrates birthday by performing ’77’ with Billy Idol and launching her own wine

Avril Lavigne celebrated her birthday by singing ‘77’ on stage with Billy Idol in Los Angeles and launching her own wine.

The pop punk star’s 41st birthday fell on Saturday (September 27), and two days ahead of the big day, she joined Idol during his show at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California for a version of their collaborative single ‘77’.

The song was released as part of Idol’s album ‘Dream Into It’ in April this year, and has been described by the former Generation X frontman as drawing on “parallels between England in 1977 and the US today”.

The Inglewood show was part of Idol’s current North American tour alongside Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and he surprised Lavigne backstage with a lavish birthday cake after the show. Check out footage of their performance below.

Lavigne also recently launched her first wine range, named ‘Complicated’ after her 2002 breakout single. Produced in collaboration with Banshee Wines, it is described in a press release as a “velvety Pinot Noir layered with bright notes of cherry and raspberry, crafted to embody the confidence, complexity, and creativity that define both Avril and Banshee”.

The limited-edition small batch will be available for $30 (£22) via their website here while stocks last. A limited run of 50 ‘Sip and Spin’ kits will also be available, with each including a record player and Lavigne’s debut album ‘Let Go’, which includes ‘Complicated’.

Lavigne has said: “Over the last two years on my Greatest Hits Tour, I was rocking out with the Banshee bar set up backstage every night, ready for the afterparty, so teaming up on our own wine just felt right. I hope that everyone can crack open a bottle with their best friends, blast the music that started it all for me, and enjoy the moment. Life can be complicated, but a good glass of wine doesn’t have to be.”

As part of the collaboration, Banshee Wines have also committed to making a $10,000 donation to benefit songwriting camps for She Is The Music, an organisation dedicated to creating more opportunities for women in the music industry.

Elsewhere, Lavigne reunited with her former husband, Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley, on stage at the Vans Warped Tour in Washington DC in June, where they played the latter’s ‘In Too Deep’.

She also teamed up with Simple Plan for the new single ‘Young & Dumb’ in May in what she described as “a full circle moment”. The Montreal band had opened for Lavigne on her first ever arena tour in 2003 and did so again during her Greatest Hits tour last year.

Lavigne will also appear on Bon Jovi’s new collaborative version of their 2024 album ‘Forever’, on the new interpretation of ‘Living In Paradise’.
