Earlier this week, it was reported that the track ‘Father Figure’ on Swift’s ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ will see the pop singer interpolate George Michael’s 1987 classic tune of the same name.
While Taylor’s version of ‘Father Figure’ isn’t a cover of the Michael tune, it will see her pay homage to the late Wham! singer, weaving in bits of his classic hit into her original track.
George Michael’s estate has since responded to Swift’s interpolation, writing on social media: “We were delighted when Taylor Swift and her team approached us earlier this year about incorporating an interpolation of George Michael‘s classic song ‘Father Figure’ into a brand new song of the same title to be featured on her forthcoming album.”
“When we heard the track we had no hesitation in agreeing to this association between two great artists and we know George would have felt the same,” they continued, before going on to wish Swift “every success with The Life of a Showgirl and ‘Father Figure.’”
Earlier in the week, Michael’s ex-partner of 13 years Kenny Goss has told TMZ that while the late ‘Faith’ singer never got the chance to meet Taylor, he believes his former partner would have loved her artistry and would have appreciated the interpolation.
Besides the credit that George Michael will receive for ‘Father Figure’, the only other feature confirmed for ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ so far sees Swift team up with Sabrina Carpenter on the title track. ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ was co-produced by Max Martin and Shellback, alongside Swift herself.
The star has insisted that there are “no other songs coming” beyond the standard edition tracklist. More recently, she talked about the “luxurious” album artwork and said fans would see “more images than we ever planned”.
Swift will also make a return to The Graham Norton Show later today to celebrate her album’s release.
