Ibrahim A., a Sudanese migrant fleeing the civil war, boarded a small inflatable boat hoping to cross the English Channel in August 2023. When the boat sank, killing seven people, French authorities arrested the 31-year-old, who they suspected of piloting the deadly voyage. He now faces 10 years in prison, unless his lawyer can prove his innocence.
