It’s been confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 is still a “long way off” with one insider claiming the game won’t launch before 2028.
The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced back in 2018 and “early development” for the follow-up to Skyrim began in 2021. In a new interview with GQ, Bethesda boss Todd Howard admitted the game is still “a long way off”.
“I do like to have a break between [The Elder Scrolls games], where it isn’t like a ‘plus one’ sequel. I think it’s also good for an audience to have a break,” he continued before saying the break between The Elder Scrolls had been “too long”.
“I’m preaching patience. I don’t want fans to feel anxious,” he added, with Bethesda currently testing The Elder Scrolls 6. “Every project, you’re reminded of the big things. We did a big play test yesterday for The Elder Scrolls 6, and you have to really look at the screen and say, ‘What is this? What does this need? Where are we at?’ Great games are played, not made. The screen doesn’t lie.”
Howard didn’t share a release window for the game but did tease that it could be launched without warning, just like the remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion earlier this year. “It worked out well,” said Howard. “I like to just announce stuff and release it. My perfect version – and I’m not saying this is going to happen – is that it’s going to be a while and then, one day, [Elder Scrolls 6] will just appear.”
According to one insider, we’ve got years to wait before The Elder Scrolls 6. “Todd definitely isn’t lying when he says Elder Scrolls 6 is a ‘long way off’, wrote journalist Reece Reilly on X. “Internally I’ve heard they are aiming for 2028 (in a worst case scenario, even 2029!!)”

According to Howard, hundreds of members of staff at Bethesda are currently working on Fallout 76 and “some other things we’re doing” but The Elder Scrolls 6 is the “everyday” job.
Earlier this year, Bethesda gave fans the chance to be immortalised in the new game as an NPC. Howard also revealed The Elder Scrolls 6 could be the last game he makes. “If I do the math, I’m not getting any younger. “I want [development] to be faster, but speed isn’t the goal.”
In other news, the brilliant original soundtrack to Hi-Fi Rush has been removed from streaming without warning.
