The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The first images have been released for the forthcoming movie adaptation of The Legend Of Zelda.

The first live action movie of the iconic video game series was announced in November 2023, with Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes director Wes Ball helming the movie. In July of this year the stars of the film were cast, with English actors Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth playing Princess Zelda and Link respectively.

IGN had reported that filming had begun on the movie in New Zealand, famously used for fellow fantasy franchise The Lord Of The Rings. Yesterday (November 17), Nintendo’s official X (formerly Twitter) account posted the first images from production, showing closeups of Princess Zelda and Link as well as a wider shot of the two actors against The New Zealand landscape. Nintendo executive and creator of the Zelda games, Shigeru Miyamoto, tweeted: “This is Miyamoto. Filming is underway for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda in a lush, natural setting, with Bo Bragason-san who will play Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san who will play Link.”

He continued: “Filming is on track for the film’s release on May 7, 2027. It will take a while until the release, so we would be grateful if you would wait patiently and look forward to it.” Miyamoto is set to serve as executive producer alongside Avi Arad, a former chief operating officer of Marvel Entertainment.

The film was greenlit following the success of 2023’s The Super Mario Bros Movie, which recently revealed the first trailer for its sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, due in cinema April 2026.

Earlier this month it was revealed a cinematic universe of Nintendo-themed films was planned, with Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa saying the tech giant was “building a framework” for future movie adaptations and wanted a “consistent release” of blockbusters.
