The crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, just made his first visit to the White House since the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. And as part of it, US President Donald Trump said one of the most shocking things we can recall a president ever saying — which is a lot, even for Trump…
As you may recall, Khashoggi was a journalist who was a fierce critic of the Saudi Arabian government. He was killed in 2018 — with the Central Intelligence Agency eventually later concluding that the 40-year-old crown prince had approved the killing. In turn, bin Salman (pictured in the inset, above right) and the Saudi government became a pariah all around the world for what many saw as so brutally silencing free speech.

But on Tuesday, bin Salman was back at the White House to visit Trump. Naturally, reporters asked the men about the Khashoggi killing. And it was Trump’s comments that dropped jaws across the country.
He started by saying he was proud of the crown prince “in terms of human rights and everything else.” And then, when a reporter specifically asked about Khashoggi, Trump slammed the question:
“You’re mentioning somebody that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn’t like that gentleman that you’re talking about. Whether you like him or didn’t like him, things happen, but [the crown prince] knew nothing about it, and we can leave it at that.”
WTF!!!
What an AWFUL comment to make about a journalist who was murdered in one of the most awful free-speech tragedies of the millennium. And for Trump, this is the second time he has gone off the handle at a reporter in days. Sheesh!
An ABC News reporter followed up with more questions about Khashoggi — as well as queries from the families of those who were killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 about whether the Saudi government had any ties to the attackers.
To that, Trump shot back:
“ABC, fake news, one of the worst, one of the worst in the business.”
Seriously?!
As for the crown prince himself, bin Salman said:
“I feel painful about, you know, families of 9/11 in America. But, you know, we have to focus on reality.”
The crown prince also tried to defend the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from the years-long Khashoggi fallout:
“It’s been painful for us in Saudi Arabia. … We are doing our best that this doesn’t happen again.”
But it was Trump’s initial remark that has REALLY drawn the ire of the public — and the anger of Khashoggi’s widow.
Over on X (Twitter), the late journalist’s grieving widow Hanan Elatr Khashoggi wrote this message directed at Trump:
“There is no justification to murder my husband. While Jamal was a good transparent and brave man many people may not have agreed with his opinions and desire for freedom of the press. The Crown Prince said he was sorry so he should meet me, apologize and compensate me for the murder of my husband.”
