US President Donald Trump on Saturday sent 2,000 National Guardsmen to address the “lawlessness that has been allowed to fester” in the Los Angeles area amid protests against immigration enforcement raids. California Governor Gavin Newsom warned the intervention of federal agents, who met protesters with flash-bang grenades and tear gas, would “only escalate tensions”.
