If you’re anything like us, you heard about the Ryan Lochte divorce news and thought immediately… what the eff did he do??
When Kayla Reid announced she’d filed for divorce, we couldn’t help but notice there was no joint statement about enduring love or conscious uncoupling. She said, “I made the hard decision to end my marriage.” I did. She left him, and she was fine with us knowing that. Not to mention the fact she’s asking for the house, alimony, full custody of the kids plus child support. It isn’t exactly giving amicable vibes. So yeah. We ask again, what’d he do?
Is that uncharitable? Cynical? Maybe. But in some extremely unsurprising news, we were all dead on the money. Unfortunately for the Olympian‘s estranged wife. People reported Wednesday evening that a source close to the family told them he “betrayed her in more ways than one.”
Whoa, what does that mean??
Well, to get it out of the way, yeah — the source confirms what many suspected. Ryan cheated! As the outlet put it, the source outright told them there were “repeated problems with infidelity” on his end. Those weren’t their words though. We wonder if it was even worse the way they said it! Yeesh!

Sadly, we just aren’t surprised. So many male athletes turn out to have a hard time keeping it in their pants. And swimmers don’t even wear pants to begin with, so…
But it wasn’t just stepping out. There was also the alcohol abuse, which Ryan sought treatment for in 2018. And the financial issues, including the lawsuits surrounding his car crash. People‘s source says he just has not been “an equal partner” to her since he retired from swimming. They say it’s like he was having something of an identity crisis.
Well, you know what? Lots of people struggle without putting their penises where they don’t belong!
Kayla tried really hard, too. She kept it all “under wraps,” says the source, “protecting him for so long and protecting their marriage.” But one person can’t keep a marriage together forever. The partner has to step up. And he hasn’t. The insider said:
“He’s damaged so much of their marriage and he’s broken her heart so many times that she doesn’t know if reconciliation is in their future.”
Damn.
Even still, making the call to file was a last resort. Kayla “never, ever wanted this,” says the source — but eventually decided it might be the only way to wake him up to how much he’s spiraling out of control!
“It just got so bad that she actually felt like by leaving he’ll have to be court-mandated to get help, essentially. And that’s all she wants, is for him to be healthy and him to be well.”
Damn. Even filing for divorce is an act of love for this woman! In the face of cheating and being a terrible husband all around? Oof.
Ryan responded to the People star with a statement making it clear he’s not going to respond during this “difficult and very personal time”:
“Kayla and I both wish to keep this matter private for many reasons, most importantly, to protect our children. For that reason, I also won’t be commenting on this matter, or replying to allegations made by third parties.”
Well, it’s not like we expected him to cop to the cheating allegations. Privacy is a really good excuse not to face accountability though. Just sayin’.
