Why are French police struggling to curb migrant Channel crossings?

Strategies to prevent small boat crossings are high on the agenda of French President Emmanuel Macron’s three-day state visit to the UK. More than 20,000 migrants have crossed the Channel from northern France to the UK in small boats so far this year – a record-breaking number over the six-month period. The UK is paying France over €500 million to prevent the small boat crossings, which the UK Home Office says “threaten lives and undermine border security”.
