New to Prime Day? We have a primer on everything you need to know.
The Legion Go S was yet another Windows-based gaming handheld when it launched earlier this year, trying to follow in the success of the Steam Deck. It might’ve languished in obscurity, but now it’s one of the few non-Steam Decks you can install SteamOS on, and Valve has even partnered with Lenovo to sell newer models of the device with its beloved operating system installed on them out of the box. On sale for $590 (was $650) this Prime Day, it’s a great opportunity to get a Steam Deck upgrade.
This Legion Go S model comes with an AMD Ryzen Z2 Go processor, 16GB of memory, and 512GB of internal storage. The IPS display supports up to 120Hz for super-smooth gaming, technically beating out even the Steam Deck OLED’s 90Hz panel.
On paper, even running this device with Windows installed is an upgrade over the Steam Deck, and increases game compatibility, but in practice, running Windows can drain a ton of resources, which has generally been a problem for gaming handhelds. That’s why it’s so great that Valve has made SteamOS available for non-Steam Deck handhelds, and performance tests already show that it’s a huge boon for otherwise identical hardware. PCMag, for example, found that SteamOS sometimes got up to twice as many frames per second as Windows on the same Legion Go S hardware. And, in some cases, it even beat the Steam Deck OLED.
The one thing the Steam Deck has over the Legion Go S is the OLED model, which has a fantastic, crisp screen. Most days, the Steam Deck OLED is my preferred gaming device, but I never would’ve considered anything else until devices like the Legion Go S got access to SteamOS. If you want a pretty powerful handheld—and don’t mind doing a little OS swap yourself (the models with SteamOS baked in aren’t on sale at time of writing)—this is a great deal on one of the better Steam Deck competitors.
