In 1990, the East Side Gallery was established on the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall, where 118 artists from 21 countries painted murals to celebrate its fall. Thirty-five years later, however, the gallery, once a symbol of alternative culture, has become a crowded tourist attraction overshadowed by real estate development, now standing as a monument framed by offices and luxury apartments, embodying Berlin’s transformation like few other places. A. Mailliet, K. Baujard and O. Trautenhahn report.
