Berlin East Side Gallery turns 35

In 1990, the East Side Gallery was established on the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall, where 118 artists from 21 countries painted murals to celebrate its fall. Thirty-five years later, however, the gallery, once a symbol of alternative culture, has become a crowded tourist attraction overshadowed by real estate development, now standing as a monument framed by offices and luxury apartments, embodying Berlin’s transformation like few other places.
