Bolsonaro coup trial enters verdict and sentencing phase as US-Brazil ties fray

Brazil’s Supreme Court on Tuesday is set to begin sessions to decide if far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro is guilty of seeking to overturn the 2022 elections to hold on to power. US President Donald Trump denounced the trial as a “witch hunt”, and slapped high tariffs on Brazilian exports, plunging relations between the two allies.
