Brad Pitt is opening up about his sobriety journey.
The F1 actor appeared on Monday’s episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, and we were surprised how candid he got! He’s infamously aloof for a movie star, at least when it comes to his personal life. But with fellow addict Dax Shepard he opened up about attending Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) amid his divorce.
Funny enough, he and Dax actually met in AA… So the podcast host addressed the elephant in the room by asking Brad if he’s “nervous” to chat given how they met in an environment of “heightened honesty and vulnerability.” Brad assured him he was actually “quite at ease” before detailing his experience with the program:
“I just thought it was just incredible men sharing their experiences, their foibles, their missteps, their wants, their aches, and a lot of humor with it. I thought it was a really special experience.”
He recalled sitting in a spiral formation during the AA meetings, with Dax towards the outer ends “because he’s been there awhile.” The Troy actor went on to reflect on his condition when first joining the support group:
“I was pretty much on my knees, and I was really open. I was trying anything and everyone. Anything anyone threw at me. It was a difficult time. I needed rebooting. I needed to wake the f**k up in some areas. And it just meant a lot to me.”
That difficult time? It was right after the Angelina Jolie split. So we’ve heard a bit about that at this point.

Given everything that went down with the airplane domestic abuse incident, we’re not surprised to hear he was in a pretty low spot. Maybe even rock bottom if he chose to finally start going to AA! But we’re glad he found somewhere where he could feel comfortable opening up and working through some feelings.
The Bullet Train star went on to recall having a ton of nerves in the sharing circle during his first meeting, but being totally inspired by “everyone [being] so open.” He dished:
“It gives you permission to go, ‘OK, I’m gonna step out on this edge and see what happens.’ And then I really grew to love it.”
He seems better because of it! You can hear more (below):
Brad first opened up about his experience in AA during a 2019 interview with the New York Times. At the time, he revealed that he entered the program after Angelina filed for divorce in 2016. He told the outlet at the time:
“It was actually really freeing to just expose the ugly sides of yourself. There’s a great value in that.”
We’re glad he’s healthier now. A lot of damage has been done over the past decade which has caused a MAJOR rift between him, Angie, and their six children. But maybe by continuing to be vulnerable he can eventually rebuild some bridges?
