Left-wing presidential candidate Jeanette Jara is leading in the first round of Chile’s presidential election, according to provisional results, and is now expected to face far-right contender José Antonio Kast in the December 14 runoff. The vote is considered one of the most polarized in recent years, shaped largely by debates over immigration and a sharp rise in murders, kidnappings, and extortion over the past decade, often attributed to foreign gangs.
