Cops Looking Into Chilling Factor In Sophia Hutchins’ ATV Accident Death

Police say speed may have been a factor in the deadly crash that killed Sophia Hutchins.

As we reported on Friday, Catilyn Jenner‘s longtime friend and manager was killed after the ATV she was driving struck a car, ran over an embankment, and went down a ravine in Malibu. Now, according to new media reports from DailyMail.com, it turns out that police believe speed was a factor in the awful crash.

Per the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department speaking to DM, Hutchins was likely traveling above the speed limit in her ATV as it wound up the steep incline of a mountain road in Malibu on Wednesday morning. At some point, it came up alongside a Mazda 6 sedan, when it apparently attempted to pass the Mazda.

In the process, cops say, Hutchins appears to have clipped the rear section of the car and lost control, eventually careening off the embankment. In turn, that led to her plunging down the cliff — roughly 350 feet, according to the police.

So sad.

Sergeant Eduardo Saucedo, a spokesperson for the the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, told the outlet:

“It looks like she may have been speeding and rear-ended the other car, the other party, and then that caused her to veer to the right and go off the cliff.”

Saucedo continued:

“It doesn’t seem like she was following them. I think she just she came up on them and then hit the car. So it looked like she tried to maneuver to go around it, but she was going too fast and just ended up clipping the rear end of that Mazda, causing her to veer off and go off the cliff there.”

There were two women in the other vehicle, which is described as a gray 2016 Mazda 6. Cops say neither of those women were injured in the incident, which occurred at around 11:30 a.m. on Malibu’s Decker Edison Road — less than a mile south of where Caitlyn Jenner lives. The police spokesperson also said that he thought Jenner might have come down to the accident site that day not long after the crash, while cops were there attending to what had happened.

Both women who were in the Mazda 6 stayed on the scene and cooperated with the police, telling them what happened and what they witnessed. Saucedo said it appears to have been a local realtor who was showing a home in the area to a client.

A search-and-rescue team eventually repelled down and recovered Sophia’s body from the crash scene at the bottom of the ravine. However, they did not recover the ATV itself — which Saucedo said was because “the tow company didn’t have a line that was long enough to attach it and pull it up.”

Wow. It all continues to be so, so difficult.
