Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin are done! And seemingly for good this time!
The engaged couple, who have been together on and off for almost eight years, have called it quits, according to several sources for People on Wednesday. Sad! While they have a history of breaking up all the time, one insider feels confident this really is the end of the romance, they explained:
“It feels final this time.”
Oof. We wonder what happened? So far, neither star has commented on the split. Are they just done with this on-and-off pattern? Did the reported open relationship mess everything up??

As Perezcious readers might know, the singer and actress faced breakup rumors last summer — months after People heard from other sources that they’d been quietly engaged for years!
It was back in March 2024 that we learned Chris had put a ring on it (something the 35-year-old would go on to flaunt a lot later in the year). Around the same time, DeuxMoi also heard from a source that “Dakota and Chris are most definitely [in an] open [relationship]. As of this past summer — and Dakota is less than thrilled about it.” Uh oh! The insider blamed it on “tour life.” Damn. Complicated! The 48-year-old is a rockstar — touring is his life. While he was committed to his partner, it also sounded like he didn’t want to give up that wild lifestyle. That was bound to get messy…
Then the summer rolled around and the Fifty Shades of Grey lead started hanging out with the musician’s ex-girlfriend, Jennifer Lawrence. It seemed like the writing was on the wall and they were over — until a rep shut down the breakup rumors. And yet a source couldn’t help but admit they had faced their challenges over the years. A confidant told People the pair have “had issues and taken breaks” since first becoming romantically linked in 2017, though they insisted things were “great” at the time.
Earlier this year, the lovebirds reassured fans when they were spotted in India amid Coldplay‘s tour holding hands in January. The duo appeared so happy together as they waved for a camera. Then again in mid-May — just weeks ago — they were seen out and about in Malibu. So, what changed so fast? And why is the source so sure this is really the final breakup? Something big must’ve happened, right? Maybe the open relationship went too far — or did they finally realize they weren’t on the same page about what they wanted for the rest of their lives — you know, like kids and marriage and that stuff? Hmm.
