Danica Patrick is getting real about one of the hardest moments of her life.
When she guested on The Sage Steele Show last week, the former race car driver was asked about “the most amount of pain” she has ever experienced. Danica didn’t hold back, declaring it was when she and Aaron Rodgers broke up in 2020 after two years of dating. She tried to express:
“The breakup with Aaron in 2020. Because it was sudden, it felt like. It was my life. So like when you live with somebody, it’s your whole life.”
Yeah, girl. Been there. Breakups can be SOOOOOOOO hard. But this was more than that. This was… Well, we’ll just let her say it.

According to Danica, the relationship was “emotionally abusive.” Whoa. She claimed:
“And because the nature of the relationship was emotionally abusive, so that wore me down to nothing. People could never imagine that I would lack … any confidence or belief in the simple things about who I am.”
That’s for sure. She’s such a strong woman! But being with Aaron beat her down…
“Everything was torn to bits. Yeah, he leaves a trail of blood. I don’t think I’m saying too much earth-shattering stuff after we — there’s been enough out there.”
Has there?!? Well, a bit…
Danica didn’t share more details about what went on in their relationship. But she’s not the only one who’s been open about a… tumultuous romance with Aaron. His former fiancé, Shailene Woodley, was previously candid about their breakup being one of the “darkest, hardest” times in her life. When she got out of the “toxic situation,” as she put it, she battled depression for six months. Oof. And looking back, the Big Little Lies star realized their relationship “was not right.” So yeah, it sounds like it’s not easy being with Aaron… Though no one is giving details we guess. Olivia Munn has stayed pretty mum about the whole thing. Kiiiinda wish someone would be a little more explicit here, especially if it helps the next hottie avoid it!
Host Sage Steele went on to ask Danica if she knew “at the time” that the relationship was emotionally abusive or if she realized it “in hindsight” after she “recovered and [had] gotten to know” herself once again. Danica replied:
“Hindsight, I ignored it, but in real life, it was just like I just feel like — I would say all the time, ‘I’m built for hard things. I can handle hard things.’ And so I just saw it as a hard thing. And my nature is to try harder and do more. And I was like, ‘What if I don’t do it for the right person?’ Like what if I just get a stick up my ass about this and get too proud and go like, ‘You know what, I’m just done.’ Instead of going, ‘Man just try a little harder because what if you look back and wish you would have tried?’ Like I would never want that in my life.”
Despite the emotional abuse, Danica does not regret anything about the relationship with Aaron or how it ended because she knows “that everything leads to the next thing,” adding:
“But it gave me the greatest gift, the greatest gift, which is myself. It gave me the greatest gift of how much I needed to show up for myself and take care of myself.”
What an important life lesson she learned! Watch the interview (below):
Aaron has not addressed Danica’s accusation yet — though will he ever? We’ll see. But what are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments.
