Doja Cat continued her streak of visually dazzling awards show performances with a fabulously retro presentation of new single “Jealous Type” to kick off the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night (Sept. 7).
After LL Cool J introduced the evening, Doja cut him off mid-sentence via a glitched-out, ‘80s-fied video — then appeared on stage alongside none other than Kenny G, whose smooth jazz nicely led into her lovingly retro single. Doja Cat showed off her choreography skills, vocal theatrics and seasoned rap flow throughout the performance, which culminated in a dance breakdown with the pop star flanked by a guitarist and keytar player strutting with her step by step.
The “Jealous Type” showcase was a knowing wink toward MTV’s roots, mixed with a forward-thinking pop sensibility. The audience at the VMAs ceremony responded in kind with rapturous applause.
Produced by Y2K and Jack Antonoff, “Jealous Type” was released in August as the lead single to Doja Cat’s upcoming fifth studio album, Vie, which is due out Sept. 26. The song debuted at No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Two singles from Doja’s previous album, 2023’s Scarlet, reached the top 10 of the chart.
“Jealous Type” was nominated for the Song of Summer award at this year’s Video Music Awards, which are being held at UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y. Meanwhile, Doja Cat won best K-pop at the ceremony alongside LISA and Raye for their collaboration, “Born Again,” from earlier this year.
