After losing a bet relating to the performance of recent single ‘D£aler‘, Elton John has given Lola Young the keys to his house.
Back in July, Elton spoke to Young for an episode of Elton John’s Rocket Hour on Apple Music 1, raving about the track in the same conversation he bet his house on its success.
Calling it “the biggest smash I’ve heard in years”, he told ‘Messy’ singer Young: “I have to say, after listening to the album, there’s a track on your album which would be the next single, I’m going to tell everyone it’s called ‘D£aler’. And if that isn’t Number One, I bet my house that that’s a Number One single.
“I bet my house. It is fucking amazing. It’s unbelievable. It’s the biggest smash I’ve heard in years,” he continued.”
In a light-hearted video posted by rising pop star Young, Sir Elton gifts her the keys to his house to uphold his end of the deal after the track didn’t reach the Number One spot in the charts.
“I’m here with Lola, and I said, ‘Lola, if your single didn’t get to Number One … that I would give you the keys to my house,’” he said in the clip, to which Young replies: “Yeah, I know, I’ve been waiting.”
When he asks if he and husband David Furnish could still sleep over occasionally, Young hits back with: “No, sorry, it’s mine now”, prompting John to grumble: “Me and my big mouth.
“Since D£aler isn’t Number One yet, @eltonjohn had to give me his house (as promised),” Young captioned the clip. “I’m sure this is the last time he’ll make a bet … Thanks @eltonjohn , love ya x.”
John wrote in the comments, “Thanks for letting us sleep over every now and then, @lolayounggg!”
The track comes off of Young’s new album, ‘I’m Only Fucking Myself’, which dropped earlier this month, and scored a three star review from NME. El Hunt wrote that despite feeling “a little all over the place”, Young had put many “surprising spins on pop into one record […] largely pulling it off”.
“One of the more interesting new names breaking out right now, Young proves that there’s far more to her repertoire than ‘Messy’, and though it occasionally lacks focus as an album, it also tees up plenty of excitement for whatever’s next.”
The singer told us about the background of ‘Messy’, which ranked as one of the biggest songs of 2025 so far, when she received the Rising Star Award at this year’s Ivor Novello Awards.
“I just wrote it from a really personal place and it can sometimes be re-triggering hearing that song because it was so intense,” she told us at the awards ceremony. “I’m out of that place now, out of that difficult time in my life.”
“I think it’s just a relatable song. A lot of people don’t feel like they’re enough for somebody; they don’t feel like they’ll ever win.”
Elsewhere, Young recently announced a 2025 UK tour, set to kick off in October. You can see a full list of dates here, and buy your tickets here.
