Brian Jordan Alvarez created and starred in the show, playing high school English teacher Evan Marquez. Each episode followed his character navigating the personal, professional, and political elements of his job at a school in Austin, Texas. The show was critically well received and earned three Critics’ Choice Award nominations.
The second season was greenlit despite accusations of sexual assault against Alvarez by Jon Ebeling, a co-star on the web series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo. The accusations were first shared on Instagram before being expanded upon in a 2024 New Yorker Magazine article.
Through a spokesperson, Alvarez denied Ebeling’s claim that he performed a non-consensual sex act on him, insisting “all interactions with Ebeling were always entirely consensual.” At the time of the article, FX released a statement saying: “We reviewed the allegations presented to us by another media outlet prior to the show’s launch. Mr. Ebeling never reached out to us with any concerns. We will have no further comment at this time.”
English Teacher ran for 18 episodes in total, with season one’s eight episodes broadcast on FX, and season two’s 10 episodes released on both FX and Hulu. Brian Jordan Alvarez has also appeared in the horror film M3GAN and its sequel, which was released this year.
Season one of the show made it to NME’s Best TV of 2024 list, with its entry saying: “Like its spiritual forebear Parks & Recreation, English Teacher is a workplace comedy filled with distinct, hilarious characters (stoner teacher Rick is a standout) and powered by a big, sentimental heart.”
“Every day is about survival for Alvarez’s character Evan as he enters the classroom, whether it is dealing with problematic Gen Z students, his workmates or his relationships with ex-boyfriend Malcolm and hot new teacher Harry. Sitcoms like this often take time to find their rhythm but the supremely confident English Teacher aces every test thrown its way.”
