This is… an odd choice.
The characters on It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia are always coming up with hilariously terrible ideas. So if you told us one of them was going to legally change their name to something “cool” and “hip” and “catchy”? We wouldn’t be surprised at all.
But this isn’t an Always Sunny plot. It’s the latest move by the show’s star and creator, Rob McElhenney. The beloved writer/actor has filed to legally change his name, per a surprising report from TMZ over the weekend. To what? That’s the kicker…
Rob Mac.
Yeah. We don’t know about that. It’s pretty common for stars to change their name to something shorter and simpler to help them gain fame. But Robert McElhenney III, as he’ll only be legally known for a short while longer, is already famous. What’s the point of doing this??

Apparently he told Variety back in May that he was considering making the legal move. Why? No one can ever spell or pronounce McElhenney, and it gets even worse in other countries:
“As our business and our storytelling is expanding into other regions of the world and other languages in which my name is even harder to pronounce, I’m just going by Rob Mac.”
We kinda think it’s a mistake. We mean, he’s at the height of his fame, right? Imagine if Arnold Schwarzenegger had done what everyone advised him to do and changed his name to “Arnold Strong”… Only imagine he’d waited until after Terminator 2 to do that! Makes no sense, right?
It doesn’t seem to make any sense to Rob’s fans, either! They’ve been roasting him for it — especially as it comes on the heels of getting into incredible shape and hanging out with richer pals like Ryan Reynolds. They just don’t think he’s keeping it real anymore — despite “Rob Mac” sounding like the name of a white rapper who would release a 1991 album titled “Keepin’ It Real.” Here’s what a few wrote:
“His veneers are taking over his body like the symbiote”
“New veneers new face new name new me”
“There’s something so deeply wrong with him and it’s all Ryan reynolds fault
“This feels disrespectful to ireland”
“what is he a coke dealer????”
“glenn and charlie gotta be embarrassed at this point”

“Dude just needs to accept he’s getting old and just go with it. It will happen to us all at some point.”

Oh no! Not that last one!
The last time we heard Rob and Kaitlin Olson were on the outs, they personally let us know that was total BS! Hopefully if there is some kind of crisis going on, that part of his identity is still solid!
