In the past hour or so, France’s foreign minister stated that, eventually, France and Algeria will need to resume a frank and clear-eyed dialogue. His remarks come as France confirms it is expelling 12 Algerian diplomatic officials—just a day after Algeria announced the expulsion of the same number of French diplomats. The move marks a sharp escalation in tensions between the two countries, just days after what had seemed like a diplomatic thaw during the French foreign minister’s visit to Algiers.
