France’s budget debate heats up as MPs reject income tax freeze

Over the weekend, France’s parliament was rocked by intense debates over next year’s budget, with MPs from across the political spectrum rejecting a proposal to freeze the income tax scale, costing the government around €2 billion in revenue. The right won cuts on overtime taxes, while the Socialists continue to push for a new tax on the highest earners. If no compromise is reached soon, left-wing leader Olivier Faure has threatened a no-confidence vote that could trigger early parliamentary elections.
