‘Gen V’ boss Eric Kripke admits he’s “irritated” fans worked out big twist: “I give them credit”

Cipher in 'Gen V'

Gen V boss Eric Kripke has admitted he was “irritated” by fans working out the show’s latest twist.

The Boys spin-off is currently airing its second season, with the latest episode showcasing a big turn of events as Dean Cipher’s true identity was unveiled.

After learning that the burned body that he holds is that of Thomas Godolkin, it’s then revealed that Cipher is actually a normal human under the mind control of the university founder.

Reacting to the turn of events, Kripke told TheWrap: “I’m well aware that a lot of the fans online have been picking apart the clues and got on the right scent. I give them credit. In the same breath, I’m irritated.”

Elaborating on the storyline, the writer explained: “That primarily came from [showrunner] Michele [Fazekas] and Tom Schnauz, her executive producer.

“[It was] just a super cool twist [and] just a really fun notion that this whole time you think Hamish is the bad guy, and then it turns out that the bad guy is actually Thomas Godolkin, which is the first person you saw the whole season and just bringing it all back to just the guy who founded the place in the first place – that was really fun.”

Gen V follows students at the Godolkin University School of Crimefighting, who are vying to join The Seven in the main Boys show.

First premiering in 2023, the show is set between seasons of the main show, with the current one taking place after the most-recent fourth season of The Boys.

Following the death of season one star Chance Perdomo, the show has not recast his role of Andre Anderson in the second, with the character dying off-screen. Gen V also honoured the late actor with a title card saying “For Chance”.

In NME‘s four star review of Gen V season one, we said: “It’s comfortable sitting in the shadow of The Boys for the time being and while the gory humour might feel familiar, this smart, sleek spin-off is never less than exciting.”
