The White House on Monday rejected a call by a French MEP for the return of the Statue of Liberty, saying that France would be “speaking German” without US help in World War II. Centre-left politician Raphael Glucksmann said at a convention of his Place Publique centre-left movement that France should take back the Statue of Liberty because the US no longer represents the values that led France to offer the statue. FRANCE 24’s James Vasina reports.
