Guyanese voters on Monday chose who would manage the South American country’s newfound oil riches amid discontent over the management of the government’s skyrocketing budget. Although abundant oil in the Essequibo region has made Guyana one of the world’s fastest-growing nations, citizens wish to see more money invested in the country’s development. Rising tensions with neighboring Venezuela, which also lays claim to the Essequibo region, also threaten Guyana’s security.
