His name is Basil Romanco. And he is a living example of human nature at its finest. He is resilience manifested into a beautiful soul!
Over the past several months, Basil has steadily captured the hearts of social media users all around the world. If you’re unfamiliar with his story, he’s an incredibly talented, multi-faceted UK-based prodigy who blossoms in the world of art, including theatre, playwriting, sculpting, music, and more. But unfortunately despite his vast talent, he’s been experiencing homelessness. In his GoFundMe, Basil explains:
“Hi, my name is Basil Romanco. A homeless man without shelter, without friends or family to call mine. Yet even when the rain seeps through my clothes and the cold gnaws at my bones, you’ll still find me tending to the flame of my passion for art.
I am a solo theatre performer, multi-instrumentalist, sculptor, playwright, and author of three books. I’ve shared my work in festivals, cafés, open mics, and on street corners. And each time, no matter the setting, it’s been received as something bold, something different, something that dares to feel.”

For months, the artist has been satiated mainly by his passion for his practice. He’s been surviving under the thin nylon and polyester layers of a tent, navigating excruciatingly cold temperatures, unrelenting rainfall, and the rest of the raw elements that come with living in the WOODS.

Yet despite his bout of bad luck, Basil has shown up for himself in an awe-inspiring way. Every day, he has gotten up and traveled to a local library, where he works tirelessly on his artistry. He authors novels, poems, screenplays, and does so with passion in his bones and determination on his face.

What an incredibly inspiring showcase of human resilience! Basil’s story has since gone viral across TikTok, with his unrelenting drive inspiring leagues of fans. And in recent weeks, something incredible has happened!
TikTok users eager to keep up with his story have contributed enough money to help him swap the damp forest floor for a warm hotel room some nights! In his more recent videos, Basil has displayed his extreme gratitude for being able to take warm showers, eat piping hot, fresh food, and snuggle up in the soft linens of his hotel bed.

He hasn’t permanently escaped homelessness, but with the support of fans he’s able to frequently stay at a hotel.

Even when he’s at the hotel, he sets an alarm to go to the lounge area and continue working on his artistry. His main goal in mind is to “bring a short film to life.” In his GoFundMe, he wrote:
“[The short film] speaks to the core of what it means to exist, to find yourself beneath the noise, to answer not with what the world has taught a person to say, but with what the soul truly knows.”
As of now, it appears Basil has raised over £10,000 (over $13,000) of his £15,000 ($19,578) goal to help cover production costs and bring his vision to life.
