A new Luther film starring Idris Elba has been announced by Netflix.

The original series starred the actor as the title character, a ruthless detective aided by a charismatic killer (Ruth Wilson). It ran for five series on the BBC from 2010-19. After that, Netflix produced a film continuation in 2023, titled Luther: The Fallen Sun, which co-starred Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo.

Now, a new film has been revealed to be in production. “Luther, Alice and Schenk are BACK” the streamer posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Idris Elba, Dermot Crowley and Ruth Wilson will reunite for an all new LUTHER movie.”

The post went on to describe the plot: “Luther has been secretly called back into service amidst a new wave of brutal, seemingly random murders. But how can he save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead.”

In addition to Elba and Wilson, Dermot Crowley will return as Schenk, a police superintendent who went from Luther’s office enemy to a key ally as the show progressed.

The film also marks Wilson’s return to the franchise after missing out on The Fallen Sun.
The series will be directed by Jamie Payne, who helmed many episodes of the show as well as the previous movie, and The Hollywood Reporter has stated that filming will commence in February 2026.

At the time of release, NME’s Ali Shutler gave The Fallen Sun four stars, describing it as “a compelling watch, with Elba delivering a gripping and emotional performance. This is his No Time To Die – a grim and gritty but also hugely entertaining final fling.”

Idris Elba was most recently seen playing the US President in the film A House Of Dynamite, however he recently revealed he “doesn’t have the courage” to go into politics after rumours emerged of him being a candidate for Mayor Of London.
