In the Finnish Arctic, reindeer herders disrupted by growing military presence

Tensions between traditional livelihoods and modern defense priorities are growing in northern Finland. Since joining NATO in 2023, Finland has increased military exercises near the Rovajärvi firing range — the largest in Western Europe. For reindeer herders, the presence of NATO and international troops has begun to disturb the animals during critical periods like calving season.
