As the crisis deepens, confidence in his ability to deliver a decisive solution is fading, and he is increasingly losing the backing of former allies, including three of his past prime ministers. Macron’s current options include calling a snap general election or appointing a new, sixth prime minister since 2022, potentially a center-left Socialist, who could help break the political deadlock and push through the substantial budget cuts needed to prevent a looming debt crisis in the EU’s second-largest economy.
