Madagascar protests escalate as military backs opposition

Hundreds gathered in Madagascar’s capital to honor those killed in recent protests, including army personnel and over 20 civilians. The elite military unit CAPSAT has joined anti-government protesters demanding President Andry Rajoelina’s resignation and named a new army head, prompting the presidency to label it an “attempted coup.” The youth-led “Gen Z Madagascar” movement, which began over utility cuts, has evolved into a broader call to end political corruption.
