Merz to be sworn in as chancellor as Germany comes under pressure from Trump

Conservative leader Friedrich Merz is set to be sworn in as Germany’s new chancellor on Tuesday, taking on an ailing economy, frayed relations with the United States and a surging far right. The anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party took second place in February’s election and has strong support from Washington.
