Miley Cyrus and her momma are opening up about the whole unfollowing drama.
Last month, Tish Cyrus made headlines after fans noticed her Instagram following list mysteriously decreased by one: her pop star daughter! At the time, fan theories ran wild. It didn’t help it happened right at the same time the Easy Lover singer had visited her estranged father Billy Ray Cyrus, who of course had a bitter falling out with Tish. But according to the mom and daughter, there were no hard feelings!

Miley and Tish appeared on Thursday’s episode of Brandi Cyrus’ Sorry We’re Cyrus podcast, where they explained what REALLY happened. Recalling the extent of the fan backlash online, Tish explained:
“Literally, they were all freaking out … thinking I really unfollowed you on Instagram. It was the worst.”
Brandi chimed in to point out “the timing was interesting,” which Miley agreed with. The Flowers singer joked with her mother:
“If you were in the family or not in the family it was weird timing. I went to go see B-Ray and, like, you did mysteriously unfollow me, Tish. And then you got some backlash and suddenly you knew how to push that follow button.”
HA!
She admitted she was “just kidding” and doesn’t REALLY think her mom unfollowed her for going to visit her dad. In fact, there’s a much more technical reason why the unfollowing happened. She explained:
“The truth is boring. There’s a bug in Meta which makes you unfollow — it doesn’t make you, it naturally unfollows the person that you follow with the most engagement.”

Tish recalled a friend asking if she unfollowed Miley intentionally before the Hannah Montana alum detailed what went through HER head at the time:
“I was like, ‘either mom lost her glasses and can’t see, which is what I thought happened, and then there was actually a bug in Meta.”

Following the drama, Miley took to her Instagram Story to shut down fan chatter in a rare statement:
“I rarely comment on rumors, but my mama and I are too tight for anything to ever come between us. She’s my best friend. Like a lot of moms, she doesn’t know how to work her phone and somehow unfollowed me — simple, coincidental and uninteresting.”
She added at the time:
“My dad and I have had our challenges over the years. Now, in my thirties, family is my priority above all else. I’m at peace knowing bridges have been built and time has done a lot of healing. Grateful for the good health and love that flows through my family.”
