Miley Cyrus almost starred in another massive children’s franchise!
During an appearance on Monica Lewinsky’s Reclaiming podcast on Tuesday, the Hannah Montana alum shared that she scored the leading role of Mavis in the 2012 film Hotel Transylvania when she was 18 years old. However, she was fired from the movie and replaced by her fellow Disney Channel star Selena Gomez! Why? It’s all because of an NSFW birthday cake!
You see, Miley stuck out her tongue and posed with a penis-shaped cake she got for her then-boyfriend Liam Hemsworth. The raunchy photos leaked online afterward. The film execs apparently did not like what they saw, so, the pop star got the boot! Miley recalled on the podcast:
“I, as a joke, got my boyfriend a penis cake for his birthday and I got fired. I was the lead actress in Hotel Transylvania, and they fired me and replaced me because I had made an inappropriate, adult joke.”

Looking back on that time of her life, the Flowers singer felt she was not allowed to be an adult because of her Disney days:
“I was 18—so yes, I was fine to work in a kids movie, but I’m not a kid.”
It is a hard transition to navigate for many big names from Disney or Nickelodeon. Unfortunately, some folks can’t look past the young characters they played or think just because they starred in a children’s show, they shouldn’t publicly do normal adult things like drink. Some child stars can’t even act or dance sexually on stage without facing harsh criticism! It’s unfair. And in her case, even Miley thought her whole controversy was a bit hypocritical and “ridiculous” because it is a typical joke made by everyone else:
“What felt ridiculous to me about getting fired from a penis cake, was that they sell penis cakes like for all bachelorettes. Like in Nashville, Tennessee, you can get penis cakes, it’s not that big of a deal. I thought you know this is like a very simple, not vulgar joke, this is silly. And you can do this for all bachelorette parties, they make necklaces and cups and straws and all kinds of stuff.”
Yet for her, she felt like she couldn’t partake in any adult activities without facing backlash:
“To be fired you know for regular things that girls my age—they go to bachelorette parties, and they go to Magic Mike shows. But if I was at that time, you know, I wasn’t someone that was appropriate for kids, even though that was in my personal life.”
What’s especially aggravating about the situation? Miley didn’t even post the photo! It was leaked by someone else after her backpack and camera were stolen during the party! Ugh! Such an invasion of privacy! When asked if she thinks a similar situation could happen now, the 32-year-old actress replied:
“I don’t know if we put our Disney kids on the pedestal the way that we used to, our teen stars. But I think that still movies can have consequences for their lead actor or actress doing things that don’t align with the audience that the movie is made for.”
