Nascida em 1923 em Hiroshima, no Japão, ela chegou no Brasil em um dos navios que trouxeram imigrantes no começo do século 20. Seu nome de batismo era Teruko Sakoda, mas ficou carinhosamente conhecido por Maria quando desembarcou, aos cinco anos.
