I strongly believe that every car owner should get a dashboard camera. Ever since I got mine, I am far more relaxed when I’m driving, knowing that another person’s rash driving isn’t going to lead to negative consequences for me. In case of an accident, you can always share dashcam footage for proof, which can prevent other cascading consequences. When I was looking for good dashcams, I read glowing reviews about Viofo’s products and the A229 Pro is the dashcam I wish I’d bought. I ended up buying the single-channel variant of this dashcam, which means that it only has one camera that points at the road in front.
The Viofo A229 Pro has two cameras (front and rear), so you can monitor both ends of the car, and the video quality is stellar even at night. It’s able to read license plates quite clearly at night, and has a mode that monitors your vehicle when it’s parked as well. During Prime Day 2025, the Viofo A229 Pro is going for an all-time low price of $239, which is 30% off its list price of $349.
My experience with Viofo has been pretty good, but I should warn you that you’ll need to purchase a few accessories to use this product. This applies to pretty much every dashcam you buy, but it still needs to be mentioned. The dashcam doesn’t ship with a microSD card, so you’ll have to get yourself one that’s equipped for 24×7 recording. The microSD cards that work great on your Nintendo Switch will die a rapid death if you use them with a dashcam, simply because they’re not designed for continuous reads and writes. If you want this dashcam to be active when the vehicle is parked, you’ll need to buy a hardwiring kit separately. I also highly recommend a CPL (circular polarizing lens) filter to reduce glare and for more clear footage. The front camera has this built-in, but you’ll need to buy one for the rear camera. You can find all these accessories on Viofo’s official website, but the products are also on Amazon.
The Viofo A229 Pro supports up to 4K at 30fps on the front camera and 2K at 30fps for the rear dashcam. It has an app that lets you download footage wirelessly from your dashcam, but to be honest, the app is quite slow and not very user-friendly. You’re better off unplugging the microSD card when you need footage, and copying it manually to your laptop or phone.
