Paul Wesley is getting real about what went down on the set of The Vampire Diaries!
Every TVD knows how shocking it was to hear Nina Dobrev and her co-star were known to “despise each other” back in the day! Nina said it herself back in 2019 — despite what it looked like on screen, these two just didn’t see eye to eye. We’ve been DYING to know what exactly caused them to hold so much against each other! And now Stefan Salvatore himself is finally spilling all the tea.
On Thursday’s episode of the Podcrushed podcast, the actor revealed their work ethic is likely the reason they butted heads so much back then:
“Long story short, I was taking the role very seriously. She was taking the role very seriously. We were all young actors, and we could tell this was gonna be special. I felt an immense amount of pressure. Perhaps that’s why we didn’t get along.”
The Smallville star said he knows he can only speak from his perspective, but admitted he didn’t really have a sense of humor at all back in the day!

He was taking his role seriously — to an extreme extent. He also revealed their methods of acting caused them to get into arguments all the time:
“We just conflicted, not about our personalities offscreen, it was more onscreen. The way in which she wanted to do a scene was not the way in which I wanted to do a scene. We were so young and I was like, ‘It’s all about spontaneity, and that’s what’s gonna create magic onscreen.’ And she was like, ‘No, we need to plan things out.’”
The 43-year-old said Nina would often try to “figure out the technicalities of the scene” while he just jumped in headfirst. We can see how that would cause some major conflict, especially since they did SO many scenes together! We mean, at the end of the day, they did spectacularly, but we can’t imagine how much arguing went on behind the scenes! Yikes.
Paul pointed out the obvious shocker in all this, noting:
“It’s so funny because people thought we had such great chemistry. We were the romantic love story on the show, and we kept it on the DL because we did a lot of press. But her and I just notoriously butted heads.”
And he means it! They sounded like a nightmare combo on set! Paul candidly recalled a time when the Degrassi actress and he had a HUGE fight on set — which caused everyone to have to take a half-hour break to cool down. Oof! It was bad!
The tension wasn’t all a result of their work styles, though. The Elsewhere star took a moment to acknowledge how skyrocketing to fame put a lot on his plate, which contributed to their issues. He said:
“The irony of the whole situation is that, as the show grew in success and as I became more comfortable in my role and as a human being — it sounds so absurdly pretentious to say this but it’s the reality — I’d never dealt with fame. I didn’t understand it. Frankly, I didn’t like it. I liked it, but I also hated it. It really affected me, and I probably wasn’t the easiest person to work with at the time.”
Fame can be a mindf**k!
Thankfully, the feud didn’t last forever! Now, he and Nina are good friends! He shared:
“The irony is that now we’re such good friends and we actually had a few things that we were dabbling with maybe doing something together.”
