Pikmin is a cutesy real-time strategy game that sees players command a gaggle of tiny creatures to solve puzzles. The original game was released in 2001 and a sequel followed in 2004. Nine years later, 2013’s Pikmin 3 was released while Pikmin 4 followed in 2023.
However it seems that fans might not have to wait a decade for Pikmin 5. Earlier this week, Nintendo shared the adorable short film Close To You without explanation. The joyful three-minute animated video features a baby and several objects seemingly moving by themselves.
The video sparked a number of rumours, with some speculating that the baby in question was a young Rosalina from Super Mario Galaxy while others were convinced it was a showcase for Nintendo’s own animation studio which launched back in 2022. Some others joked it was a Metroid Prime prequel. “It is clearly [an ad for] Metroid Prime 4. This is a flashback to baby Samus before her parents were killed. The objects flying around are related to the psychic powers she gets in the game,” wrote one fan on Reddit.
Yesterday Nintendo uploaded a new version of Close To You which sees a number of Pikmin responsible for the moving objects.

“Now the question is: is this just a cute video or a tease for Pikmin 5,” wrote one fan, while others think a film or TV series could be in the works. “Only thing that throws me off is it says Nintendo and not Nintendo Switch. It’s way too well animated to be a game trailer…I’m thinking it’s a movie,” said another fan. “It’s teasing something Pikmin, that’s all we know for now,” added a third.
Nintendo recently confirmed the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be be called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and take heavy inspiration from 2007’s Galaxy game. A live-action Legend Of Zelda movie is also in the works and there are rumours an animated Donkey Kong flick is also being developed.
In other news, Microsoft has confirmed the first wave of titles heading to Xbox Game Pass this month following a controversial price increase.
