Tens of thousands of Catholics, global dignitaries and politicians, including US Vice President JD Vance, are gathering at the Vatican on Sunday for the inaugural mass of the first US pope, Leo XIV. The Pope made his first tour of St Peter’s Square in his popemobile ahead of the mass amid cheers from the crowds who spilled onto the square to greet him.
