Ryan Reynolds just managed to offend an entire state…
The Canadian movie star is a man of many entrepreneurial talents… Yes, he makes a great Marvel antihero in the Deadpool movies, but he likes to cast a wide net. He owns Welsh soccer team Wrexham A.F.C. with Rob McElhenney, runs production company Maximum Effort, holds stakes in Mint Mobile and Aviation Gin, and more. And his latest business venture sees him taking on wine… but the boxed kind. And ONLY in Minnesota — because he feels an “underdog” beverage is only ripe for an “underdog” state. Oof.
During an interview with the Star Tribune published on Monday, the Free Guy star discussed his new boxed wine brand Ugly Estates, which is available exclusively in Minnesota. Why? Because according to Ryan, only a state like Minnesota could appreciate such a beverage:
“You want to go to places that will get it. I don’t think Martha’s Vineyard is going to really embrace this the way Minnesota might.”
Ummm, ouch! So in his mind, are Minnesotans not classy or refined enough to enjoy what the rich folk enjoy?? Folks from Martha’s Vineyard — a notably affluent island — are too good to drink beverages from a box, but rough and rugged Minnesotans aren’t? We mean, even that name! Ugly Estates?? Who launches a state-exclusive product, uses the word “Ugly” to market it, and expects people to rush in to burn their hard earned money on it?! Tell us you’re in the elite class without telling us you’re in the elite class!

The Proposal star continued to dig himself into a deeper ditch, admitting he’s only ever visited Minnesota TWICE in his life — yet was able to make this assessment so easily:
“I come from Canada. They love making fun of our accent, and they love going after the Minnesota accent and doing a little caricature. When I’m watching Fargo or something like that, I’m like, ‘I don’t hear it the way you do.’ I just hear my mom the way she talks.”
Is… is he trying to make it seem like he’s one of them? Like he’s laughing WITH them? Because it’s pretty obvious he’s laughing at them!
Ryan touted his wine as “ugly wine — good wine, but done in a way that is super affordable,” promising the brand “lean[s] into the mischief.” But on social media, Minnesotans were NOT pleased at Ryan very clearly looking down on their state — despite US News & World Report ranking it as the fourth best state overall:
“Wait a minute. Are you implying Minnesota is the ugliest state? My god Ryan your marketing technique sucks”
“He thinks Minnesotans are cheap and lack taste.”
“As a Minnesota resident… I’ll pass.”
“News flash to Ryan — most people who drink wine here don’t drink boxed wine”
“What is this guy even saying?? The whole marketing strategy behind this is so bizarre… like who does he think hes enticing??”
“Banned! Thanks for doing another stupid interview with the Minnesota paper, @vancityreynolds . Now I know NEVER to buy this. Ryan Reynolds is a dumpster fire”
