Russian forces seized nearly 5,000 square km of Ukrainian land in 2025, says Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday Russian forces had captured nearly 5,000 square km (1,930 square miles) of Ukrainian territory this year, claiming Moscow retained “complete strategic initiative” on the battlefield. The gains represent about 1% of Ukraine’s land area, bringing total Russian control to nearly 20%.
