Ryan Lochte‘s wife has filed for divorce… and the statement she put out confirming the situation is a DOOZY.
On Wednesday morning, Kayla Rae Reid took to Instagram to reveal she has filed to split up from the 40-year-old Olympics swimming superstar. This is so sad!! The couple — who got hitched in 2018 — shares three kids! Ugh!
Amid her IG post making waves online, People did some digging and discovered court records which showed Kayla actually filed for divorce back on March 26. So this thing has been brewing for a while now, with a filing more than two months old! And yet only hitting the public eye in the last few hours… And they’ve kept it quiet? Why? What happened??

So, the key here is Kayla’s VERY candid statement about the split. In her IG post, the model started out by saying how this has been “one of the most painful, revealing, and challenging seasons” of her entire life. She also mentioned “fresh, open wounds” related to the breakup:
“Earlier this year, I made the hard decision to end my marriage after deep prayer and reflection. I hold marriage in the highest regard, so this has been one of the most painful, revealing, and challenging seasons of my life. I’ve been hesitant to share until I could do so from a place of healing — not from fresh, open wounds.”
Oof.
It sounds like the Playboy Playmate was completely blindsided by whatever it was that caused the split. She said people sometimes “face trials we didn’t choose or see coming,” and then added that “leaving was an act of love”:
“Sometimes we face trials we didn’t choose or see coming. And in those moments, we’re forced to make the hardest decisions to protect our peace, our children, and our future. I’ve come to understand that staying isn’t always the most loving decision someone can make. For me, leaving was an act of love — for those around me and for myself.”
Girl, WHAT HAPPENED?!?!
She tried to conclude on a positive note:
“Living with transparency and authenticity has been how I have grown into the person I am today, and I’ll continue to do so — while also protecting the parts of this journey that are private and unfolding in uncharted territory. I believe God is still at work — even in the breaking, even in the unknown. I choose to believe that new growth can emerge from broken ground. Moving forward, I’m choosing to give myself grace. I’m choosing resilience. And I’m choosing to believe that what lies ahead will bring strength and peace. Your prayers and continued support mean the world to me right now.”

FYI, Kayla later re-shared the post on her IG Story with a bandaged heart emoji and a caption that read “time to exhale.” Yeah…

She’s not the only one speaking out, tho. The 12-time Olympic medalist — who shares son Caiden Zane, 7, daughter Liv Rae, 6, and daughter Georgia June, 23 months, with his estranged wife — also put out a statement on IG. About two hours after Kayla shocked the world, Ryan tried to be as positive as possible:
“I want to take a moment to acknowledge what Kayla shared. This past year has brought major changes for both of us as we’ve come to the difficult decision to end our marriage. I’m deeply grateful for the life we’ve built together and especially for the love we share for our three children.”
Notice how her statement says SHE made the decision to end her marriage, his tries to say it was a mutual decision? Hmm…
The retired swimming superstar then continued:
“Although this decision hasn’t been easy, I believe it’s the right step toward peace and well-being for us both. I remain committed to healing, growth, and co-parenting with care and respect as we move forward separately. Thank you to our family and friends for your continued support -— it truly means a lot as we begin this new chapter.”
