A stampede at a rally for a popular Indian actor and politician in the southern state of Tamil Nadu killed at least 39 people on Saturday, after a crowd of some 27,000 people waited hours in baking heat without sufficient safeguards, officials said. Witnesses cited hours of delays and insufficient police presence as contributing to the tragedy.
