Sydney Sweeney has responded to backlash from her promoting a soap infused with her bathwater.
In late May, the actress announced on social media, in a joint post with natural handmade soap brand Dr. Squatch, that she would be launching a soap called Sydney’s Bathwater Bliss.
The limited product was said to be made with the star’s used bathwater and described as “a perfect combination of the two best places on the planet: The outdoors and Sydney Sweeney’s bathtub.”
The move made headlines and caused controversy, but a recent Wall Street Journal interview is the first time the actor has spoken about it.
“It was mainly the girls making comments about it, which I thought was really interesting,” she said of the response, adding: “They all loved the idea of Jacob Elordi’s bathwater.”
The Euphoria star was referencing 2023’s Saltburn, which featured a scandalous scene where lead Oliver (Barry Keoghan) drinks the bathwater of the object of his obsession, Felix (Elordi).
She did not address the recent controversy surrounding her involvement in the American Eagle Jeans campaign, which many online have accused of having racially undertones. Both Lizzo and Doja Cat have criticised the campaign, while Sweeney was heckled at a recent film premiere, with an onlooker shouting: “Stop the ad, that is being racist!”
American Eagle released a statement in early August, saying: “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story”.
The commercial received praise from US President Donald Trump, who called it the “HOTTEST ad out there” and also expressed delight at the news that Sweeney was registered as a Republican supporter at the last election.
On the subject of her acting career, last month Sweeney revealed she would be open to starring in a sequel to Barbie alongside Margot Robbie.
