Sydney Sweeney has addressed rumours about being the next Bond girl in a new interview, shutting them down and saying that she would “have more fun as James Bond”.
Speculation has grown over who will star in the next James Bond movie, after it was announced that Amazon MGM Studios would take over creative control the franchise. Sweeney was reportedly pegged to be one of the favourites to step into the Bond girl role, the colloquial nickname given to the love interest of special agent James Bond in each movie.
Now, the Euphoria star has addressed and swiftly shut down these rumours in a new cover feature interview with Variety. Sweeney reportedly “unravelled” for the first time during the conversation when asked about the rumours.
“I can’t,” she reportedly said before a seven-second pause. “I don’t know,” pausing again. “To be honest, I don’t know all the Bond rumours, but I’ve always been a huge fan of the franchise, and I’m excited and curious to see what they do with it.”
When asked if she would be interested in the role, she answered: “Depends on the script. I think I’d have more fun as James Bond.”
It has been reported that the character of Bond will remain as male under Amazon’s management, despite previous speculation.
The hunt for who will actually play the next James Bond continues, and last month, a report suggested the new person to step into the coveted role will reportedly be a “fresh face” and British.
Daniel Craig departed the film series with 2021’s No Time To Die and speculation has been rife ever since about the identity of his 007 successor. When Amazon took over, Dune filmmaker Denis Villeneuve and Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight were later confirmed as director and writer of the next film, respectively.
Deadline has reported that Villeneuve and the producers are seeking a “fresh face” and will only be choosing from British actors. Their preference is said to be to cast “an unknown” who is in his late 20s or early 30s.
Elsewhere in the Variety interview, Sweeney spoke about getting into the role of Christy Martin in the new biopic Christy. The film – which has flopped with critics so far – charts the career of American boxer Martin, who rose to prominence as one of the most successful female athletes in the sport, and later endured and survived domestic violence and an attempt on her life by her husband and former trainer, who is portrayed by Ben Foster in the film.
Speaking about preparing for the role, Sweeney made parallels between boxing and acting. “I am definitely a caged animal in a sense,” she said to Variety. “Acting is my ring. It’s where I feel freedom. The set is where everything else goes quiet.”
In other Sydney Sweeney-related news, a new trailer for The Housemaid, which stars Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, came out last month. The Euphoria star plays Millie Calloway, a housemaid for a wealthy family headed by Andrew and Nina Winchester, played by Brandon Sklenar and Amanda Seyfried.
The trailer, shared by Lionsgate in September, begins with Millie being greeted by Nina as she arrives for an interview and being shown her room as an unsettling version of Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Please Please Please’ plays, interspersed with an ominous scene of someone banging on a wooden door.
Meanwhile, an HBO executive has confirmed that Euphoria – in which Sweeney plays Cassie Howard – will officially be coming back for a third season next year. Back in May, Sweeney said the new season will be the most “unhinged” yet.
Filming had initially been scheduled to begin in late 2023, but was halted due to the Hollywood strikes and the unexpected death of star Angus Cloud. HBO has now revealed its full cast, with a spate of fresh faces joining Sweeney, Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi, and the other main actors.
Among the new cast members are Bella Podaras, Bill Bodner, Cailyn Rice, Colleen Camp, Eli Roth, Gideon Adlon, Hemky Madera, Homer Gere, Jack Topalian, Jessica Blair Herman, Kwame Patterson, Madison Thompson, Matthew Willig, Natasha Lyonne, Rebecca Pidgeon, Sam Trammell, Trisha Paytas and Danielle Deadwyler.
